Weekly home sales up 9.5% at John Lewis

John Lewis’ total sales for last week (to June 25) were £96.7m, up 7.3% on last year.

Ed Connolly, director of fashion for the department store group, explained that in line with the market, Clearance was brought forward compared to last year, and this was the main driver for the increase.

Sales in Home ended the week up 9.5%. Despite the unpredictable weather seen in parts of the country, sales in outdoor living finished up 9.7%. Ed said furniture also “performed strongly” with sales up 14.2%. Highlights included beds and bedroom up 19.7% and living dining up 19.4%.

EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) sales were up 10.2% year-on-year, with communication technology once again the star performer, up 19.3% on last year. Vision (televisions) also sold well up 4.4%. Ed noted that the highly anticipated The Dyson Supersonic  hairdryer launches on Friday for £299.

Fashion ended the week up 4.1%. Sales in childrenswear, nursery and haberdashery stood out at up 14.4%. Menswear was up 10.7% and womenswear was up 4.4%.
