Weekly home sales up 1.7% at John Lewis

Sales totalled £90.8m for John Lewis last week (to July 2) – up 2.1% on the previous year.

The department store group’s director of shop trade Maggie Porteous said Summer Clearance continued to attract customers into shops and the cooler weather also played a part, with last week competing with 35deg C temperatures during the same week in 2015.

Home sales finished the week up 1.7% compared with last year. Beds and Bedroom Furniture were the strongest performers across the category, reporting a 15.5% increase in sales.

The launch of the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer bolstered sales of EHT (Electricals & Home Technology), but a slower week for Small Electricals meant the category finished the week at 0.1%.

Fashion sales were up 3.8%, with Babywear a stand-out performer at 21.9%. Jewellery also had a strong week, with sales up 15.6%. In terms of Menswear, it was Formalwear that reported the biggest increase, with sales up 14.7%.
