Weekly Home sales down 2.4% at John Lewis

John Lewis finished last week (to May 28) with total sales of £80.7m, down by 1.6% year-on-year.

The department store group said the sales comparisons to last year are distorted because the same week last year included both the Bank Holiday and half term holiday.

Sales in Home were -2.4% on last year, although beds and bedroom saw a 4.1% uplift.

EHT sales were -1.2%, although continued growth in mobile supported sales in the Communication Technology category, which finished the week up 9.4% year-on-year.

Fashion sales fell just short of last year at -0.7%, despite strong performances from women’s casualwear +9.8%, thanks to price-matching a competitor’s promotion, and women’s swimwear and nightwear +7.9%, as holiday season begins.

The week also saw the launch of the rooftop garden at John Lewis Oxford Street branch, with visitors enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine over the weekend.

From May 27 to September 4, the rooftop has been transformed into an area of blooms and fresh herbs, hosting pop-up restaurants in collaboration with Night Tales, a coffee shop, activities such as yoga, and a garden where shoppers can relax and take time out.
