Waitrose weekly sales down 2.7%

Total sales excluding fuel were 2.7% lower last week (to Saturday August 3) at Waitrose & Partners than the same week last year, as the country continued to see mixed weather.

The supermarket chain’s finance director Ross Avery said: “Sales of wine were up, with English and Welsh wine proving particularly popular with our customers. Champagne also had a sparkling week with sales up 20%, and pizza and pasta sales increased as shoppers looked for convenient cooking options.

“Last week we announced that we’ll be extending our Waitrose Unpacked test following an overwhelmingly positive response from customers. The concept tests customer appetite for a series of ideas designed to reduce packaging.

“We’ll now be introducing elements of the concept into three more shops by the end of the year [Cheltenham in Gloucestershire in September; and Abingdon and Wallingford, both in Oxfordshire, in November], which will help us find out more about customers’ willingness to change their shopping habits as well as understanding its commercial viability.”
