Waitrose shoppers seek sunshine-related food and drink

Total sales excluding fuel at Waitrose & Partners were 0.6% higher last week (to Saturday August 24) than the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s personnel director Jo Walmsley said: “The warm bank holiday weekend led to strong sales of drinks, with top performing ranges including rose wines and beers.

“We also saw an increase in other sunshine-related food and drink including ice creams, soft fruits and barbecue meats.

“In particular, we’ve noted a trend for barbecuing seafood, with sales of seabass and seabream higher for the weekend, and with big increases in searches on Waitrose.com up for sardines, fish kebabs and squid.

“Our gardening ranges also saw a boost at the weekend as many chose to spend time outside.”
