The supermarket chain’s commercial director Rupert Thomas said: “Comparisons are heavily distorted by the earlier fall of Easter this year, which means that we are comparing six days of trading – with most shops remaining closed on Easter Sunday – with a full week’s trading in 2017.
“A cold, wet week compared with last year saw sales of warming soups increase by 17% and accompaniments to Easter roasts, including gravy and Yorkshire puddings, rise by 7%.
“A ‘spring clean’ promotion proved popular with customers, as sales of laundry and household cleaning products increased by 27% and 26% respectively.”
He added: “This week sees the arrival of Summer Blush strawberries, an exclusive variety grown for Waitrose.”
