Waitrose shoppers opt for comfort food and drink

Total sales excluding fuel were down 2.1% last week (to Saturday May 18) for Waitrose & Partners.

The supermarket group’s supply chain director Wim van Aalst said: “Sales were distorted as a result of last year’s royal wedding and good weather, which fell in the same week last year.

“The cooler weather saw shoppers opt for warming comfort food and drink, with sales of canned soup, rotisserie chickens, vegetables and tea all rising.

“Last week we announced plans to treble the size of our successful online grocery operation to a £1 billion business over the next three years. As part of this, we will be working in partnership with Today Development Partners (TDP) to develop three state-of-the-art automated Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs).”
