Waitrose shoppers get into the Wimbledon spirit

Waitrose retail director Rob Collins said: “Our strong performance was helped by the excitement building towards Wimbledon, despite the dull weather for much of the country.

“We saw posh picnic and dining trends across our ranges, with top performers including bottles of Champagne and other sparkling wines.”

Customers also snapped up a promotion on English strawberries, with sales increasing by 47% compared to last year, double cream up 59% and single cream up 78% to go with them.

“Royal Ascot and Wimbledon have led to distinctly British sales patterns in other areas too,” Rob Collins continued. “We sold 66 % more scones and 48% more clotted cream.

“To celebrate these key summer events, people chose Pimm’s, which saw a boost of 96% and gin with a sales growth of 51%.

“The summery trend continued despite the lack of sunshine, with salad sales growing by 15% and ice cream sales up by 13%.”
