Waitrose shoppers enjoy Bank Holiday roast dinners

Sales at Waitrose excluding fuel were down by 2.2% last week (to Saturday August 25) compared with last year.

The supermarket chain’s customer director Martin George said: “A cold and wet weekend for most of the country contrasted with a very hot bank holiday weekend last year.

“The cooler temperatures led many towards a bank holiday roast, pushing up sales of cold weather-related food including gravy, root vegetables and Yorkshire puddings.

“We also saw strong sales of apples for the week, as customers took the opportunity of supporting British apples coming into season.”
