Waitrose shoppers celebrate Chinese New Year – and get set for Valentine’s Day

Total sales excluding fuel were up 2% at Waitrose & Partners last week (to Saturday February 9) compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s supply chain director Wim van Aalst commented: Chinese ingredients, sauces and stir fry were in strong demand as shoppers celebrated Chinese New Year [on Tuesday February 5].

“Baked goods also proved popular, with sales of hot cross buns and bagels up 87% and 34% respectively.

“Those looking to spoil a loved one on Valentine’s Day this week [on Thursday February 14] can choose from a number of bouquets in our shops and on Waitrose Florist. Customers can also enjoy our Valentine’s Day meal deal for two, which includes a choice of three courses, plus a bottle of wine, fizz, or a box of chocolates for £20.”
