May 30 – June 5 sees the return of National BBQ Week, which celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Brand Belief Ltd, which owns and operates The 20th National BBQ Week, said: “Created way back in 1997 when the cry was ‘if it ain’t burnt, it ain’t barbi’, National BBQ Week has not only helped change all of our attitudes towards BBQ and summer eating, but has also helped grow the BBQ market from just 9 million BBQ occasions back then to over 130 million last year.”
According to Brand Belief Ltd, BBQing and at-home eating and entertaining is now the UK’s number one summer home leisure activity, with two in three households owning a BBQ grill.
Some 14% of all households have two BBQ grills and 5% have three or more. Traditional US ‘smoker’ BBQs are now in 2.5% of all homes – and 2% of all households now have some form of outdoor kitchen, Brand Belief Ltd claimed.
The company added that in 2015, the UK was once again Europe’s leading BBQ nation, hosting over 130 million barbecues and beating the Germans into second place for the fifth time.
The average number of BBQs held per family during the summer has risen sharply from around 2.5 around 10 years ago to over nine now.
The overall BBQ & alfresco eating & entertaining market in 2015 was worth just over £7.1 billion, up from £150 million back in 1997.
The sponsors of 20th National BBQ Week include: Majestic Wine (Lead Sponsor & Official Wine), Bombardier (Official Beer), debbie&andrew’s (Official Sausages), Fire & Smoke (Official BBQ Book) and Harvester (Official BBQ Restaurant).
