Sales of steam cleaning devices have rocketed by 94% over the past year at John Lewis, according to a report in the Daily Mail last Saturday (April 19).

The newspaper put eight of the best-selling models to the test and concluded that the ‘best all-rounder’, with maximum marks of five out of five, was the H2O X5 Steam Cleaner (£79.99) from Thane.
The model is billed as a multi-functional five-in-one steam system (floor cleaner, carpet cleaner, hand-held steamer, window cleaner, garment steamer) that will ‘clean, help sanitise and freshen your whole home, all in one lightweight, compact machine’. The steam mop converts to a handheld model and comes in red, green or white. The Daily Mail tester Jenny Wood’s verdict was: “Easy to use, quick to heat up and tackles a range of jobs.”
Other models tested, ranging in price from £34.95 to £349.99, were the Hoover SteamJet Handheld Steam Cleaner, Polti Vaporettino Lux Steam Gun, Karcher SC 5.800C, Hoover SteamJet Cylinder Steam Cleaner SCB1500, Morphy Richards Power Steam Pro Pulsonic Steam Mop, Shark Lift-Away Steam Pocket 5-in-1 and the Light’n’Easy Steam Mop from Lakeland.
