Tesco’s Wimbledon stores set to serve during tennis fortnight

Tesco stores in Wimbledon are gearing up for a fortnight of tennis with a programme of tastings, samples, giveaway and special offers.

Some 500,000 visitors are expected to visit the London neighbourhood over the next two weeks to watch its annual tennis championships, which began yesterday (Monday June 27) and runs until Sunday July 10.

Tesco will be offering tastings of strawberry and cream at its Wimbledon Metro store as the fruit has become intrinsically associated with the tournament. The grocery multiple expects to sell 1,500 tonnes of strawberries over the fortnight, which equates to nearly 250 punnets sold every minute.

The retailer will also be handing out queuing survival bags to those camping to get into the venue during the second week of the tournament. The bags will contain items such as bottles of water, ponchos, sun cream, and a packet of Murray mints.

The stores will also have exclusive offers on popular items such as Evian 500ml bottled water at 2 for 90p and Pimms 1L for £12.  Last year, Tesco sold 2.8 million litres of water and 21 bottles of Pimms were sold every minute during the Championship.

David Genower, store manager of Wimbledon Metro, said: “We’ve gone all out in our store for the two weeks of tennis, from serving up strawberry and cream samples to handing out essential products to those visiting the tournament. We’ve also got great offers on key summer products so that our customers have everything they need to enjoy the Championships.”

Tesco’s Wimbledon Metro has one again also changed the ‘O’ on their store sign into a tennis ball, and has created its own centre court at the front of the store.
