Sunshine boosts sales trends for Waitrose

Total sales at Waitrose for the week ending Saturday (May 27) were 4% higher than the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s finance director Loraine Woodhouse said: “The warm weather heading in to the bank holiday weekend prompted sunshine-led trends across our shops and online.”

Top performing ranges were fruit, which saw an increase of 9%, and beers, wines and spirits, which saw a 16% rise in sales for the week.

Best sellers within these ranges were strawberries (up 34%), Italian aperitif Aperol (up 70%), and rose wine (up 54%).

Other food and drink seeing a weather-related boost included barbecue meats (up 34%), deli foods (up 13%), ice cream (up 14%), and ‘food to go’ products (up 14%).

Loraine added: “English wine week started on Saturday (May 27), and more people than ever have been choosing a home-grown bottle to celebrate. Sales of our range of English wines were up by 93% last week compared with last year.”
