In his presentation, the ceo of product design and development studio Sebastian Conran Associates will argue why “good design must always seem effortless, but in truth the process is often quite complex. How can you be a universal expert designer and keep it consequential, original and aspirational whilst being affordable?” he asks. “This is the challenge that faces all leading designers across the world, whether in the brand, digital, fashion or engineering industries.”

Sebastian says his equation for success is quite straightforward: aim to create real value at every level of the innovation journey. His 3F [Form Follows Fabrication] approach is to keep the user in front of mind and ensure that all challenges are met with elegantly simple solutions – which, he asserts, is always a lot more complicated than it looks.

During his career as designer, Sebastian has been involved in the development of thousands of functionally innovative products, from home merchandise to advanced intelligent robotic furniture.

Sebastian Conran Associates is currently collaborating on an array of projects with many leading international partners such as Universal Expert: a collection of innovative home goods ranging from cookware to storageware.

In addition, in his role as Designer in Residence at University of Sheffield, Sebastian is exploring the limits of technology by “designing for our future selves in the areas of advanced additive manufacturing; accessible robotics and smart homes that enhance the experience of later life”.

The Housewares Conference, which is hosted by BHETA home enhancement executive director Will Jones, is designed to provide members of the housewares industry with ideas and inspiration, in an environment of shared experience and learning. Now in its sixth year, the event – which is organised by Housewares Magazine and www.HousewaresLive,.net – will be held on April 22 at Wokefield Park in Berkshire.
