Sainsbury’s Home and Argos Home to sponsor New Designers exhibition

Sainsbury’s Home has announced its partnership for the second year with New Designers, and for the first time, Argos Home will also partner with the upcoming exhibition.

Opening tomorrow (Wednesday June 27) at the Business Design Centre in London, New Designer is a two-week celebration of design that sees students of 200-plus creative courses unveiling never-before-seen work to thousands of industry professionals and design lovers.

Last year’s partnership saw four graduates join Sainsbury’s Home for a 12-month placement. This year, a winning graduate from each week of the show will be awarded the ‘Sainsbury’s/Argos Young Designer of the Year’ title, that consists of a £500 cash prize and mentoring from the Sainsbury’s Home and Argos Home Design Studio.

The two winners will also be invited to join 10 other shortlisted graduates to be interviewed for one of two year-long paid work placements with Sainsbury’s Home and Argos Home. They will not only work closely with the design and buying teams on developing the next homeware collections for 2019, but will also receive exclusive mentoring from design expert Sophie Robinson.

Andrew Tanner, design manager at Sainsbury’s Home and Argos Home, (who started his career at New Designers in 1997) said: “New Designers is a platform for the most creative and innovative graduates from across the nation’s design courses, and we’re excited to attract the newest talent into our in-house design team.”

On the stand this year, Sainsbury’s Home will be displaying works by the four winning designers from 2017 across furniture, ceramics, print and pattern and textiles. The retailer’s bespoke built interactive space will host one-to-one tutorials for the graduates. The in-house design and buying teams will also be offering bookable portfolio reviews, where visitors can obtain advice as well as apply for recruitment opportunities.
