Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail teamed up with independent retailers across the UK today to celebrate Independents’ Day 2012.
Retailers from Aberdeen to Penzance came together to support the campaign and take part in the wide range of activities both in-store and on the street, from special discounts to barbecues and street parties, with the aim of driving customers in-store and reminding them of the benefits of shopping local.
Skillsmart Retail encouraged consumers to ‘get behind our high street heroes and buy at least one item in an independent shop’.
Independents’ Day followed the launch on Sunday July 1 of Independent Retailer Month, which was kick- started by a conference held at Cranmore Park near Solihull. The event was dedicated to providing independent retailers with insights, expertise and peer group networking.
Event organiser Clare Rayner said: “The conference went very well and we are looking at expanding that so more indies can benefit from the networking, support, advice and inspiration that those who came on Sunday enjoyed.
She added: “We’re looking at two events, in Leeds and London, and perhaps twice a year – gearing up for an Indie Christmas campaign to get people buying Christmas gifts.”
