Radio 2 to broadcast Mary Berry Special on Christmas Eve

BBC Radio 2 has announced that as part of its festive schedule, the queen of baking Mary Berry will be welcoming listeners to her home, as she chats to Liza Tarbuck in ‘Mary Berry: At Home For Christmas’.

The programme is one of the BBC Radio Christmas highlights for 2015, as revealed by Director of BBC Radio Helen Boaden last night (Wednesday 25 November). The special programme will air on Christmas Eve from 12pm to 2pm, with Liza visiting Mary at home for lunch.

BBC Radio 2 said: ‘Expect festive food, Mary’s music and a healthy helping of nostalgia. In the grotto that is Mary’s kitchen, listeners will be treated to some of her most indulgent seasonal recipes, get a unique insight into the music that soundtracked her childhood, and find out what Christmas means to her.’

Mary will share her recipes for her ideal Christmas food, including chestnut and apricot stuffing, frangipane mince pies, leek and stilton soup, mincemeat loaves and mulled wine, along with tips for the perfect roast potatoes and parsnips. While tucking in, she will play festive music by artists such as Dean Martin, Perry Como, Shakin’ Stevens and Wham!, along with her own choices of hymns.

Mary said: “Christmas is a time for sharing and a great excuse to indulge your family and friends with your favourite recipes. There are so many wonderful ingredients to use and dishes to make. I’m looking forward to showing Liza around my kitchen and sharing a few of my family traditions, including my recipe for the perfect mince pies, which really are quite special! It will be wonderful to celebrate Christmas past and present with Radio 2 listeners and a joy to share some fond musical memories.”

Liza said: “It’s an absolute treat to be invited into Mary’s home at Christmas. I’m hoping to pick up several festive food tips, and if she needs me to sample her cooking in the name of public service broadcasting, my goodness I’ll do it! I’m very keen to hear her music choices because music is so personal and a wonderful way to really get to know someone.”

Lewis Carnie, Radio 2 Head of Programmes, said: “We have a fantastic schedule of programming coming up this Christmas on Radio 2, and I’m delighted Mary Berry has agreed to be a part of it. This special show on Christmas Eve with Mary and Liza is the perfect winter warmer over the festive period.”
