Poundland selects Southend for new store

The 8,400sq ft branch has just opened on the ground floor of The Victoria Shopping Centre, between Boots and Next. Store manager Dan Martin said: “The initial response from local shoppers has been overwhelming and we’ve had a higher than expected turnover. We look forward to firmly cementing the store as part of Southend’s shopping DNA.”

The Victoria Shopping Centre manager Dennis Baldry added: “Poundland is a great addition to the centre for Southend shoppers. The well-known and loved high street brand will help to draw in footfall, offering a slightly different proposition to the other retailers within the centre. We look forward to a long and prosperous future with them.”

Poundland, which describes itself as Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer. is the current winner of the Variety Discounter of the Year category of the 2014 Grocer Gold Awards. More than 540 stores have been opened in the UK and the Republic of Ireland since 1990. Poundland sells over 3,000 own-brand and branded products for the single price point of £1 each across 17 shopping categories including food and drink, health and beauty, household, gardening, DIY, pet, stationery, books, DVDs and toys.

The company had a record 2013, with a host of new initiatives including its first ever discount retailer celebrity partnership, with its Jane Asher bakeware range. Total sales were up by 13.3% year-on-year for the business and it continued its ambitious expansion plans, opening 70 new stores. Southend joins three new Poundland branches which opened late last month in Carlisle, Aylesbury and Chiswick.
