John Lewis finished last week (to May 7) with total sales of £81m, up 11.6% on last year.
The department store group’s head of foodservice Alison Smith commented: “In a week defined by the changeable weather, all three product areas [Home, Electricals & Home Technology, Fashion] had a strong performance, and Bank Holiday Monday in particular drove trade.”
Home sales rose 10.3% year-on-year with Outdoor Living the star performer, up 110% on last year, as customers made the most of being outside in the sun. Home Accessories and Gifts were up 27.8% and Furniture was up 13.7%.
Electricals & Home Technology (EHT) “had a strong week” with sales up 11.9% on last year. Alison said, adding: “The warm weather had a positive impact on sales, with cooling products up 48%. Tablets and computing had a strong week too, with sales up 24.3%.”
Fashion sales lifted 3.4% on last year, with many customers buying warm weather products. Women’s accessories were up 16.8% with sunglasses and sandals selling particularly well. And “it was a great week” for Beauty too, with Fragrance up 23.8%.
