Online spending is still at a record high, despite the general economic gloom.

Online spend up 50% in first quarter

The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show that UK consumers spent £13bn online in the first quarter of the year – £213 for every person in the country – and a 50% increase over the first quarter 2007.

Online shoppers are also spending a third more per visit, £12, than they did five years ago.

The biggest beneficiary in recent months has been the beers, wines and spirits sector, which saw online sales in February and March soar by 60%. Clothing, footwear and accessories have also fuelled growth.
