Mother’s Day and Easter timings affect John Lewis trading

Total sales for John Lewis & Partners were down 8.8% last week (to Saturday March 9) on the same week last year.

The department store group’s director of shop trade Maggie Porteous said the results were impacted by the later falls of Mother’s Day and Easter this year.

She commented: “Home sales were down 10.7%. Outdoor Living sales were up 8% due to the warmer weather. Fashion sales were down 10.1%. However, warm weather clothing was up 9% and Menswear sales grew 3.3% due to new brand launches in this category.”

She added: “Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 6.3%. On Friday we launched our own-brand Personal Care range, which includes hair dryers, hair straighteners and men’s grooming products such as clippers.”
