A strong week for online sales, combined with preparations for Mothering Sunday, helped generate a total sales uplift of 3.3% (excluding fuel) for Waitrose last week (to February 27).
The supermarket chain’s finance director Loraine Woodhouse said online groceries saw “particularly robust growth” with sales up 14.1% year-on-year, while sales of Mother’s Day cards grew by 10%.
The homeware category was boosted by sales of Mother’s Day gifts, including candles and vases, which helped generate a 10.2% increase.
Loraine Woodhouse added that sparkling wine and Champagne are also likely to be enjoyed during Sunday’s celebrations, with sales up by 6.8% and 4.8% respectively.
