Monday saw the busiest online shopping minute ever, with £1.4m spent at 1.43pm.
The 60-second tally for online retail sales delivered a 61% like-for-like increase on last year’s figure, according to Retail Decisions.
The company also revealed that the busiest online shopping hour on record was between 1pm and 2pm on Monday, when retailers started discounting heavily and consumers looked to scoop a Christmas bargain during their lunch break. In the hour, they spent £33m online.
Retail Decisions says its latest research shows that nearly three-quarters of internet shoppers will be doing half or more of their total Christmas shopping online. It adds that if consumers continue to spend at this level its forecast for December of £5bn will be exceeded.
