Total sales excluding fuel were up by 2% last week (to January 21) on the same week last year for Waitrose.
The supermarket chain’s finance director Loraine Woodhouse said sales showed a mix of shopping habits, as the cold and frosty weather influenced sales of comfort food, while other customers stuck to their healthy New Year’s resolutions.
She added: “Fresh fruit sales thrived, with vitamin-packed citrus fruit up 13%. Stir fries were a favoured midweek meal, with sales of pre-packed vegetable mixes up 38%.
“Conversely, indulgent categories such as cheese and beer also saw strong sales. Shoppers treated themselves to something sweet too, as frozen dessert sales rose by 9 % and confectionery increased by 13%.”
