Mary Portas is back on the small screen on Monday

A new TV series starring retail guru Mary Portas airs on Monday (May 9) at 9pm on Channel 4.

In ‘What Britain Is Buying,’ the Queen of Shops meets high street buyers, trend forecasters, celebrity endorsers and customers to find out which products are most popular with the British public.

Channel 4 said: ‘Why are adults playing with Lego? What are those male beauty products doing in your bathroom? What’s a freakshake? Armed with inside information from Britain’s biggest retailers, Mary Portas finds out which products are flying off the shelves – and which aren’t shifting.’

This series follows a Channel 4 documentary entitled ‘What Britain Bought in 2015’, which aired on December 30. In the show, Mary looked at the shopping trends of 2015, from the ‘must-haves’ to the ‘why did we evers?’

She said products that became best sellers last year included coconut oil, beard oil and bread trimmers, grey and pastel hair dye, ‘athleisure’ wear (athletic leisurewear, designed to be worn in and outside the gym), adult colouring-in books and Prosecco.

For housewares retailers, there were two success stories: the NutriBullet blender and the spiralizer.
