Isle of Man retailer Mantons Cards has taken home the British Independent Retailers Association’s (bira) Local Hero award for 2016.
The Port Erin-based stockist of greetings and gifts collected the award at the bira gala dinner on May 11 from Simon Bicknell of sponsor Toolbank.
The bira Local Hero award is given to a bira member which has ‘engaged with its community and has helped or supported local initiatives with honour and credit’.
The judges said: “Mantons Cards has been named as one of the most influential small businesses in its local community, and regularly features in local press and radio for the contributions it makes to the community.
“Each year the retailer choses a charity to support, and has helped raise over £13,500 for various charities in the past seven years.
“Its current fundraising campaign includes a ‘card design competition’ where customers are invited to design a charity card that goes on sale.
“Fundraising for local charities is a core part of the business and, in fact, this business didn’t enter this category. The judges were so impressed with all the fundraising and local charity work that it does that they made the award.”
Mantons Cards also takes away £1,000 to donate to its chosen charity.
