Luxury Housewares works with Welsh Slate

Luxury Housewares has been selected to work with Welsh Slate to develop new ranges of tabletop and kitchen giftware.

The new collection will be launched to retailers at London trade show Exclusively Housewares in June.

Welsh Slate’s main activity is quarrying slate for roofing, architectural cladding and flooring, at its Penrhyn site in North Wales.

Luxury Housewares founder Paul Kempsey said: “Unlike imported slate, Welsh Slate is effectively non-absorbent, so it doesn’t need to be lacquered and can be used as a plate to dine from, rather than as tray or serving platter.

“It’s also dishwasher-, microwave- and conventional oven-safe. Light scratches can even be rubbed out with a damp cloth, while the application of a little cooking oil burnishes the surface.”

Four years ago Welsh Slate launched the Slateware range, designed by Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines and styled as ‘a contemporary collection of handcrafted slate tableware, plates, bowls, placemats, coasters and platters’.

Paul said: “We’ve known and admired the Slateware range, which is really successful within the hospitality sector, for some time. So when the chance arose to work with one of the world’s finest materials – 500 million years in the making – we jumped at it!

“Working with the highly respected Cardiff-based design consultancy Sanders Design Associates to create something really special with this wonderful raw material is truly exciting. We’re all looking forward tremendously to launching the new collection mid-summer.”

Luxury Housewares is a new venture responsible for the sales and marketing in the UK and Republic of Ireland of housewares brands including Chroma knives and sharpening accessories and Mepra cutlery.

Paul has many years of experience of the housewares industry. His career includes 15 years at Prestige, 13 years at Paton Calvert and more recently, JWP.
