John Lewis weekly sales up 6.1%

John Lewis saw ‘strong growth’ last week (to May 21) with total sales of £75.5m, up 6.1% year-on-year.

EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) had the highest sales growth at 9.2% on the year. Within this, Communication Technology was the stand-out performer thanks to mobile phone sales and the department store group’s three-year guarantee on Apple. Sales climbed in Connected Home (up 14%), and Tablets and Computers continue to drive sales in this area (up 13.2%).

Home sales were up 5%, with Furniture up 8.7% thanks to especially strong sales in Beds and Bedroom. The improving weather drove Outdoor Living product sales, which were up 11.9%. Gift food and seasonal was also up 8.7%.

Fashion sales finished the week up 4.7% as customers took advantage of a competitor’s promotion, being price-matched. Fashion Accessories proved popular, ending the week up 13.8%, with Beauty Counter up 11.4% and Sports up 11.5%.
