John Lewis shoppers prepare for Mother’s Day and Easter

Total sales for John Lewis were down 14.4% last week (to Saturday March 3) on the same period last year.

Home sales declined 17.2% but customers preparing for Mother’s Day on Sunday (March 11) and Easter purchased seasonal gift food, up 36%, and sweets, up 43% on last year.

Electricals and Home Technology sales were down 6.3%. However, heating products were up 265% and sales of tumble dryers were up too.

Fashion sales were down 18.8% but customers wanting to wrap up warm purchased hats, gloves and scarfs, with sales up 38%. Sales of boots were also up 36% compared with last year.

The department store group’s buying director of fashion Christine Kasoulis commented that staff across the chain ‘made an incredible effort to support trading after snowy weather across the UK impacted our sales and disrupted some of our operations’.
