John Lewis shoppers get into the Christmas spirit

Total sales at John Lewis & Partners were up 11.9% last week (to Saturday October 12) on the same week last year.

The department store group’s electricals & home technology buyer director Laurence Mitchell said: “Customers purchased new season items due to cooler weather and enjoyed shopping promotional events across home and fashion.

“Home sales were up 13.8% as customers begin to prepare their homes for the festive season, with Christmas product up 25%. Quirky baubles such as dinosaurs are proving particularly popular, and shaped and animal baubles are currently outselling round baubles 7 to 1. Furniture and flooring was up 7.4% and carpets were up 26%.

“Electricals & Home Technology sales were up 9.5%. Small electricals sales were up 8.4% driven by personal care, with hair dryers proving popular as customers continued to combat the wet weather.’

“Fashion sales were up 13.7% as customers enjoyed shopping our fashion promotion, which started on Friday. Womenswear was up 28% and menswear was up 25.9%, as the cooler weather saw customers buying new season products. Cashmere overall was up 48%.”
