John Lewis plans 2014 Birmingham opening

The £100m development project will see the new John Lewis shop constructed on the south side of a redeveloped New Street station, and will create 650 jobs at the department store and 900 in total for the wider economy.

The 250,000 sq ft John Lewis shop is scheduled to open in 2014, and will be one of the largest John Lewis department stores outside London, offering homewares, fashion, furniture and beauty.

The plan has been agreed between John Lewis, Network Rail and Birmingham City Council.

The investment is a major boost for the city, where council leader Mike Whitby said: “I’m delighted that John Lewis will be joining the Birmingham retail family. We’ve been working to secure their presence in the city for over two years now, and to see the fruits of our negotiation borne out today is phenomenal.”
