John Lewis customers wait for Black Friday

With four weeks to go to Christmas, people are beginning to decorate their homes – but seem to be waiting for the Black Friday deals to do much of their gift buying, claims John Lewis.

The department store group’s director of shop trade Maggie Porteous said home sales were up 0.6% last week (to November 19), with home preparations for the festive season driving furniture sales up 3.2%. Home accessories and gifts were up 1.8%.

She added that Buster The Boxer merchandise, based on the character in the retailer’s Christmas advertising campaign, is proving “really popular”. The Buster cuddly toy, mug and book were among John Lewis’ top 10 best-selling items of the week.

Fashion sales were down 0.4%. Womenswear performed the strongest, with sales up 9.5% year-on-year, followed by childrenswear, nursery and haberdashery products which were up 2.3%. 

In EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) – where customers expect to see the biggest Black Friday deals – sales were down 8.2%.
