John Lewis customers refresh their homes with decorative touches

Total sales for John Lewis & Partners were down 2.7 % last week (to Saturday August 3) on the same week last year.

The department store group’s director of merchandising operations Jon Williams said: “Home sales were down 7.1%. However, customers were refreshing their homes with decorative touches as we saw rugs up 17%, mirrors up 4% and art up 6%.

“Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 6.6% as we competed with a strong week of Environmental Care product sales including fans and air purifiers alongside last week’s cooler weather.

“Fashion sales were up 5.8%, driven by sales of Womenswear which were up 21.7% and Women’s Accessories which were up 8.3%.We also saw customers buying new season items, with Autumn/Winter Womenswear up 5%.”
