John Lewis director, retail services, Barry Matheson said: “Trade in shops looked relatively strong going into the weekend but the warm weather in the south of the country took the edge off the weekly total, particularly in some of the major regional shopping destinations.

“The Home team were pleased with the performance of the big ticket areas and forward orders suggest there is more to come there in the weeks ahead. Inevitably the gifting ranges are most significantly impacted by the [Easter] calendar shift and we will need to keep our nerve there for a couple more weeks.”

The refurbished shop at High Wycombe put on increases with last week up 19.3%, followed by Newbury, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Norwich, who were all above the 5% mark.

Barry Matheson concluded: “Looking forward, we have numerous promotional and seasonal opportunities to make the very best of the opportunities ahead of us.”
