John Lewis: ‘Summer story plays out across Home category’

Total sales for John Lewis were £73.7m last week (to August 6) – an increase of 7.3% on last year.

EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) had ‘a strong week’, with sales up 11.2% on the year.

Maggie Porteous, director of shop trade for the department store group, said: “Evidence suggests that customers are making high-tech purchases ahead of their summer holidays, with cameras and wireless headphones both proving popular.

“The warm weather also continues to drive sales of home cooling devices, which finished the week up 61%.”

The summer story played out across the Home category too, with sales up 5.4% on the year. Outdoor Living items continued to be popular, with sales up 13.3%, while the launch of John Lewis’ exclusive collaboration with Loaf also bolstered sales.

Fashion sales were also up 5.4% on the year.
