Indian summer boosts deli sales at Waitrose

Waitrose & Partners’ sales excluding fuel were 1% lower last week (to Saturday September 14) compared with the same period last year.

The supermarket chain’s supply chain director Wim Van Aalst said: “With temperatures rising towards the weekend, sales of suncare products increased four-fold. Deli sales were up and soft fruit and stone fruit, including cherries, also performed well.

‘The Indian summer led to a strong week of sales for beer, wines and ciders, with rose, tequila and boxed wine proving particularly popular in the sunshine.

“Waitrose also released ‘The Good Food Guide 2020’ which revealed this year’s very best places to dine in the UK. A total of 1,200 eateries are listed in the trusted restaurant handbook, from big names to some of the UK’s best-kept secrets.”
