Total sales excluding fuel at Waitrose & Partners were 2.9% higher last week (to Saturday January 19) than last year.
The supermarket chain’s commercial director Rupert Thomas said: “Increased demand for healthy food continued, including our new stir fry bags which are proving popular. Vegan and vegetarian food sales remain strong as many customers switch to meat-free alternatives and our dairy category had a strong week, boosted by sales of kefir. As the winter weather sets in, customers are also stocking up on health and beauty products.”
He added: “We’re exclusively selling British Dorset lamb which is the first new season lamb available in 2019. The lambs are bred and reared in England’s West Country and are looked after by a group of around 30 specialist sheep farmers, who farm to the highest standards of animal husbandry and welfare. The lamb has a juicy, melt-in-the-mouth texture with a wonderfully rich flavour.”
Andy Boulton, service counter meat buyer at Waitrose, commented: “We love bringing our customers great quality products and due to our fantastic relationships with our farmers – some over 20 years – it allows us to have Dorset lamb exclusively in the UK.”
