Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant gets slated

Fife-based The Just Slate Company, which specialises in slate coasters and tablemats, will be supplying products for the two chefs’ restaurants in Edinburgh and London.

Just Slate began life in a Kirkcaldy garage in 1998 and is now owned by Scottish-born Donny Carstairs. The business has grown rapidly to become a key supplier of slate housewares at home and abroad. Carstairs says he also takes environmental issues into account when it comes to packaging and the company’s impact on the environment.

The products are made in a factory in Kirkcaldy, where the slate is selected, cut and shaped before being oiled and packaged.

“Slate is a natural product formed over millions of years and no two pieces are the same,” says Carstairs. “That means that every item we produce is unique in both contour and shade, something our craftsmen and women are adept at accentuating.”

This year, the company aims to increase its UK customer base and participate in gift fairs across the country. It also plans to develop opportunities for online sales in the US and Europe with the launch of a new website.

Along with mats and coasters The Just Slate Company offers trivets and clocks. Retail stockists include John Lewis, Baxters, House of Fraser and Jenners.
