The cloud of volcanic ash that continues to cause mayhem for air travellers has forced the postponement of the biggest annual gathering of the global retail industry.
The World Retail Congress was due to be taking place this week in Berlin. However, the event has been postponed until October, as the international programme of over 100 speakers struggled to reach the city for yesterday’s opening day.
As the world begins to emerge from the effects of the global recession, the congress was expected to welcome more than 50% more participants than in 2009.
Organiser Emap Communications says it is hopeful that most speakers will be able to reschedule for when the congress goes ahead in the autumn. The line-up included such high-profile names as Philipp Schindler, vice president of Google, and Laura Wade-Grey, CEO of Tesco.com.
The congress will remain in Berlin, with confirmed dates to be announced shortly.
