Gin continues to be a top seller at Waitrose

Total sales excluding fuel were 0.4% higher for Waitrose in week to Saturday August 12, compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s supply chain director Wim van Aalst said: “Our Waitrose 1 promotion [of 25% off the grocery multiple’s premium food range] continued to be a success with customers.” Popular products included coffee, biscuits and pasta.

Wim added: “Last week’s mixed weather, combined with a number of televised sporting events, drove customers to choose convenient meal options.” Sales of Asian ready meals, for example, were up 25%.

Beer, wines and spirits was also a popular category. Gin continued to be a top seller, with sales up 24% compared with last year, and malt whisky sales up 18%.
