The former chief executive of Boots is reportedly about to make an offer for Matalan.
According to Retail Week, Richard Baker could be on the brink of launching a bid worth around £1.5bn for the discount retailer in his role at private equity firm Advent International.
Advent has interests in investments in fashion retailers and in value retailer Poundland.
John Hargreaves, founder and owner of Matalan, put the company up for sale last month.
