The award categories are: independent retail business of the year, independent retail employee of the year, independent team of the year, Charitable Champion and Local Hero.
The winners will be announced at a black-tie ceremony, held on the evening of May 10 (following bira’s National Conference during the day) at Jury’s Inn Hinckley Island Hotel at Hinckley in Leicestershire.
The gala will be hosted by ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ 2017 contestant, ex-Communards pop star and BBC Radio 4 host The Reverend Richard Coles.
The association’s buying group – bira direct – will also announce its supplier awards at the event. These accolades honour the best suppliers serving the independent market.
The night will conclude with a ‘secret’ entertainment act, followed by networking in the hotel bar until the early hours.
Surinder Josan, managing director of All Season’s DIY at Smethwick in the West Midlands – who will be appointed bira’s national president for 2018-2019 during the National Conference – said: “As an independent business owner, I know my success is not only down to me but to those around me too. And with everything else that we retailers have to contend with, we don’t often get the opportunity to say thank you.
“The bira Awards are an excellent chance for you to put forward your teams and employees to let them how wonderful you think they are, and to have them recognised on a national scale.
‘Being nominated for an award – and then potentially winning it – is such an honour and it really boosts your whole business. So I would urge all bira members to put themselves and their fantastic teams forward for a 2018 bira Award.”
