Entertaining at home will become a major trend next year according to exhibition organiser Clarion Retail, which is forecasting areas of retail that might remain buoyant despite – or because of – the economic gloom.
Says Clarion Retail’s creative director Nigel Carrier: “Cooking has become a national obsession. Entertaining at home appears a popular alternative to eating out, and with this goes the appeal of dressing your living space with accessories such as candles, linen, kitchen accessories, china and glass.
“As summer approaches outdoor accessories will have an equally strong appeal.”
Carrier also believes that children’s products will do well. “With a new shopping list for 2009 consumers are prioritising, and gifts for children will win out,” he says.
“This has been a boom area for a number of years and may prove to be one of the most resilient areas for retailers in 2009.”
Carrier also predicts a move towards affordable indulgence and luxury to give instant gratification, and to value.
