Easter gifts and cards help drive sales at John Lewis

Total sales for John Lewis last week (to Saturday February 24) were up 0.3% on the same week last year.

Alison Smith, director of shop trade south and west for the department store group, said Home sales were down 0.8% but furniture and flooring sales were up 3.3%. “Our 2018 spring/summer outdoor furniture range went on sale last week and achieved a record launch week for outdoor furniture,” she said.

Alison added: “Demand for Easter gifts and cards is driving sales in gift food and stationery.”

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 2.1%.  Electrical sales were up 4.5% driven by strong sales across TVs, small electricals, vacuum cleaners and large electrical items. In Communications Technology, John Lewis saw strong sales of smartphones.

Fashion sales were up 0.4%.“Womenswear sales continued to have a standout performance, with sales up 6.3% due to customers beginning to buy items for their spring/summer wardrobes,” Alison commented.
