Housewares retailers can expect a boost in sales of everything picnic and party related over the coming days and weeks, with virtually the entire nation planning a big Jubilee and Olympics celebratory summer.
New research from the Money Advice Service, conducted among over 2,000 UK adults, shows that 88% of households – that is over 23m – are planning to make merry this summer. On average, people plan to celebrate no fewer than four events during the season, with four in 10 admitting they are likely to spend more than usual this summer.
Collectively, the nation will be shelling out £3bn on this summer’s fun – averaging £111 per household. However, 60% of those surveyed said they did not know how much their celebrations would cost – and 70% did not care.
The Money Advice Service survey coincides with the launch of its online Big Summer Planner, a free calculator to help people quickly get to grips with the overall cost of the summer’s events and celebrations.
