Cold weather spurs record online week at John Lewis

The website, johnlewis.com, pulled in £23.97m-worth of business in the seven days to Saturday, the first time the online operation has crossed the £20m mark for a week.

John Lewis puts the increase down to the snowy weather conditions: on the Wednesday – which saw the worst of the snow – online sales rose 98% over the same day last year.

Overall, the department store business achieved weekly sales of £103.7m, a rise of 1.2% on the same week last year and 3.7% up on last week. Saturday saw one of the group’s biggest trading days at £20.87m.

Particularly good sales were achieved in heaters, nightwear and cold weather fashions, while gift food ideas also took off – in particular Hotel Chocolat and Edinburgh Preserves gift sets.
