Total sales for John Lewis for last week (to Saturday July 8) were up 2% to £86.7 million compared with last year, supported by strong Clearance sales.
Home sales were up 0.2%. The department store group’s customer director Craig Inglis commented: “Outdoor living performed particularly well, with sales up 55% – a record for the month of July.
He added: “As the hot weather and outdoor entertainment continues, so too does the appeal for cocktail gifting [gifts for cocktail lovers], with gin sales increasing by 102% last week.”
Electrical and home technology sales were up 8.4% boosted by a 42% jump in Microsoft sales, following the launch of the brand’s new Surface Pro Tablet and Surface Book.
Fashion sales were down 1.6% but beauty, wellbeing and leisure were “stand-out” categories with sales up 4.1%.
