John Lewis said that the first day of its clearance sale on Saturday December 27 produced a record day’s trade.

The department store group achieved a total of £21.3m – up 7% on the same day’s trade last year.
The company said that china, linens and other home products were being snapped up by shoppers clearly in bargain-hunting mode. There were also strong sales in home technology and womenswear, producing record results.
“This is a remarkable result at any time,” said managing director Andy Street, “and particularly so in this challenging economic climate. John Lewis customers are being judicious in their purchasing and recognise the outstanding quality and value of the products we have on offer, particularly in our home assortments as well as in audio visual and fashions.”
