Total sales excluding fuel were down 0.2% at Waitrose & Partners last week (to Saturday October 26) compared with the same week last year.
“However, we still saw good sales growth in some categories,” said the supermarket chain’s customer director Martin George.
“Supported by strong promotional activity, including our recently refreshed Waitrose & Partners No.1 range, we saw a 70% increase in sales of bakery goods and prepared meals.
“Pizzas and fresh desserts were up 12% and 7% respectively, while Christmas bakery sales have also already seen significant uplifts with sales of panettone up 11% and stollen sales up 37%.”
